Carers Symposium & Expo 2008
Burswood 24th & 25th November 2008
* a number of sponsored places are available for carers requiring financial assistance

Join us for a two day Carers Symposium & Expo which explores how carers are being HEARD, INCLUDED & SUPPORTED. Discover what impact the Carer Recognition Act has had on carers and service providers, how cultural change in our community is leading to better recognition and greater value of the caring role, how practical support options are being developed and why workplaces need to become more carer friendly.

Meet the "experts" (you and other carers) and service providers as the "Worth of Carers" is discussed, debated and recognised through a series of interactive workshops. Join us for "Question Time" where you get to ask the questions and discover pathways for solutions. Finally we invite you to take part in OPEN SPACE - where you get to create, debate and discuss issues on your own agenda.

The Care Necessities Expo is designed to showcase and display three key areas for carers, taking a break, links to services and support for carers - here you will find an array of services and products to assist you and the person you care for. We've also built in a chill out zone for relaxation, treats and pampering.

'Health Care for Kids - The People, The Map and The Measure'

Venue: Manly Pacific, Sydney, NSW
Start Date: Monday, 17 November 2008
End Date: Tuesday, 18 November 2008

Co-convened by Children’s Hospitals Australasia (CHA) and the Association for the Wellbeing of Children in Healthcare (AWCH)

The conference will focus on three major themes: The People, The Map and The Measure.

Our two organisations are joining forces to highlight the importance of advocating strongly for the healthcare needs of children and young people in Australasia.

The themes we have chosen will enable a detailed exploration of:
• ‘The people’ – in particular the shared concerns amongst health professionals and the families struggling with serious health issues;
• ‘The map’ – contemporary trends and developments in healthcare practice, policy and environments; and
• ‘The measure’ – how we can best monitor, evaluate and improve the safety and quality of health care delivered to children and young people.

We also want to explore these themes in the context of common elements across all themes:
• Early intervention
• Culturally sensitive and appropriate services
• Working in partnerships
• Research, evaluation and continuous improvement.

The people
• Engaging with, and listening to children and young people
• Partnering with families: a family centred approach
• Essential satellite services for families: volunteers, charities and support groups
• Nurturing and invigorating our workforce.

The map
• The patient journey: continuity and transition
• Healthcare environments
• Innovations in illness prevention, health promotion and service delivery
• Meeting the challenges in child and adolescent mental health – a family focus

The measure
• Measuring and improving the quality and success of health care

Genes for Health

Date: 3-6 May 2009
Location: The Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle, Western Australia

* Call for Papers will close 1st December 2008

The Conference
Rapid advances in medicine in general, and genetic research in particular, has led to the development of a chasm between new discoveries and the translation of these to public health benefits.

Genes for Health 2009 represents a synergistic collaboration between the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA), an organisation dedicated to genetic and clinical sciences, and the Genome based Research and Population Health International network (GRaPH-Int), a global enterprise that aims to help transform knowledge and technologies into public policies, programs and services for public health benefits. Genes for Health is GRaPH-Int's inaugural conference and we are tremendously excited at the opportunity to combine this landmark event with HGSA's 33rd annual scientific meeting.

Genes for Health 2009 will accommodate a broad range of interests including basic genetic science, clinical genetics and genetic counseling, genetics education, genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics, social science, bioethics and health policy.

We hope to see you there for a stimulating and thought-provoking scientific event.

Professor Mohamed Karmali - Executive Director GRaPH-Int
Professor Jon Emery - Chair, Local Organising Committee
Professor Peter O'Leary - Chair, Local Organising Committee
