The Genetic Support Council of WA Inc is the representative peak body for genetic support groups in Western Australia.
Since its inception in 2002 the Council has worked to raise awareness of the impact of genetic conditions on health and daily living and, to facilitate the greater participation of consumers in policy, planning, research & service delivery across the genetics field.
We provide up-to-date information, resources and referral services and mentor genetic support groups.
To promote and develop awareness of genetic & rare conditions and their impact on families and community, to foster research, encourage and support service delivery by genetic support groups and facilitate their development by linking and empowering individuals, families and communities.
The need for this peak body to coordinate and enhance the effectiveness of community genetic support groups was identified in the Review of State-wide Delivery of Genetic Services in Western Australia, conducted in April/May 2000.
The first Annual General Meeting of the Council was held on the 20 May 2002 and a Board of Management appointed. The Council commenced operations in July 2002 with 48 genetic support groups electing to become members of the Council.
